It all started after Miss Nande khayizone from Mabopane a small town in Pretoria, South Africa got admission into Germany on a 50% scholarship to pursue her passion in Interior design and decoration.
The goal was to acquire a masters in Interior design and decoration and after the end of the program, she would work for a while to gain experience of how the working class of the Europeans interacted on a business level.
Something many Europeans do not understand is that in Africa, the child is not only for the parents but also the community. When Nande got admission to Europe, her poor parents who were common farmers could not raise the other 50% needed to send her to school. The parents had to seek the assistance of members of the community with hopes and promises that once Nande was done with her education and started to gain grounds in Germany she would in turn bring other less privileged children from the community to Germany.
Due to such hopes and promises, each family wanted to invest in the future of Nande. What they didn't know was that the world wasn't as green on the other side as they had hoped
Getting to Germany was all glee and gayish for Nande. She had never seen so much concentration of white heads in a community and in her class, she was the only person of color. Another, factor that Nande and her community didn't put into consideration was the cultural shock that came to moving to a different society and the language barrier was the most alarming.
The first semester proved Herculean to Nande as some of the lectures were in German. During the summer break, Nande had to take long hours studying and learning German, in addition to that, she also became a tutor and worked night jobs so she wouldn't have to ask her family for money. Even though, there were times when she was so frustrated and wanted a break from school, work and everything at large, all she had to was call her family.
Family can both be supportive and tentative or laikadiasical and malevolent. In Nande's, her family was supportive with just a flaw "the always reminded her of background and what the community had to contribute to her. With dedication and perseverance, Nande was able to complete her masters with a good grades.
In a nutshell, studying abroad for africans isn't really a smooth singsong joyride due to challenges that could alter the course of our stay in Europe and endanger the schedulled goals set aside for ourselves.
Before traveling out and of the country as an African, always be aware of the risks and the natural deposition of intercountry gridlocks you are bound to meet.
